How often should you service your trailer?

Regular trailer servicing is essential for both safety and performance. As a general guide, trailers should be serviced every 12 months or 10,000km, whichever comes first. If you tow frequently, carry heavy loads, or store your trailer outdoors, more frequent servicing is recommended. Routine maintenance helps prevent mechanical failures, extends the life of components like brakes and bearings, and ensures your trailer remains roadworthy year-round.

What to expect from your trailer service?

Tyres & Wheels

  • Check tyre condition, tread depth, and sidewall cracks.
     

  • Verify tyre manufacture date and recommend replacement if required.
     

  • Check and adjust tyre pressure.
     

  • Inspect wheels for damage or excessive wear.

Lighting & Electrical

  • Test all external lights including indicators and brake lights.
     

  • Check trailer plug (7-pin / 12-pin) and Anderson plug for secure connection.
     

  • Test battery condition (if applicable) and check charge system.

  • Inspect and test brake magnets (for electric brakes)
     

  • Adjust brake shoes as required.
     

  • Check hydraulic, mechanical, electric or air-assisted braking systems.

Hitch & Coupling

  • Inspect tow hitch and coupling for damage or wear.
     

  • Check and lubricate handbrake lever and handbrake cables.
     

  • Lubricate and inspect jockey wheel.
     

  • Test breakaway system (if fitted)

Suspension & Undercarriage

  • Inspect suspension system and replace worn bushings.
     

  • Grease suspension components and grease nipples.
     

  • Check and lubricate cables or chains.
     

  • Inspect drop-down legs and stabilisers.
     

  • Check for rust, cracks or damage under chassis.
     

  • Tighten all undercarriage bolts and connections.

General Safety & Accessories

  • Inspect and tighten all bolts and fixings.
     

  • Check trailer frame for any signs of wear or fatigue.
     

  • Inspect and test roof hatches or compartments (if applicable.)
     

  • Check any installed accessories (toolboxes, ramps, racks etc.)
